Thought experiment: If NEW gun purchases with high capacity clips required insurance, the way autos do, would that effectively price most young males out of the market because of risk? We'd still have plenty of weapons, but mostly owned by the safest demographics. Discuss.

Friction to whom? The people, who would comply with this law are most likely the demographic that wouldn’t need it. Is the goal to lessen the behavior of owning legal firearms?

Adding friction for the overwhelming numbers of responsible gun owners because of the acts of a few nut cases is the very opposite of our Bill of Rights. When bad people wish to do harm, they will find a way. A mass murderer doesn’t give 2 shits about friction.

do the overwhelming number of gun owners use high capacity magazines? Or are they sinhle digit magazines for self defense?

You don't add friction to a natural right.

Mass shooters tend to obsess over and plan their rampages for months, it would take a LOT of friction to deter them. You would probably have a bigger impact on suicide, which is surprisingly often a passing desire.
