They are definitely real. But thinking in terms of slippery slopes makes people conflate a moderate or reasonable amount of X with a complete takeover of X. That leads to oversensitivity and extremism and prevents compromise That’s the real problem with slippery slope thinking https://twitter.com/DaWooperNation/status/1169394466005966849 …

Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) establishes right to privacy in contraception ban case based on "emanations and penumbras". That is then used for Roe v. Wade in 1973, juvenile contraception in 1977, decriminalizing sodomy in 2003, same-sex marriage in 2015...

Yeah, to use your example you don’t want people to respond to a request for a stick of gum as if you asked for their car. But some do! “Allow law-abiding citizens to own guns? You have blood on your hands!” “Red flags? The first move of a dictator is to disarm the population!”
-
Given that they look the same how does one know in advance when is the first move of a dictator or just common sense gun control policy?

Now do anti-smoking laws. I remember when it was just: "All we want is a warning on the side of the pack, is that too much to ask?" Look where we are now. Need other examples?
