If someone has been convicted of violent crime, that is very different that the government judging people, thought police, stripping rights from non-felons.

Prisons have their own private property rights to not allow on convicts to carry weapons while in their jail. It's not about, or at least should not be about, legal gun restriction, but private property rights. In this case the prison owns, so rules.
