Hey @joelvanbrunt do you agree, based on the evidence, that we should try to stay below the recommended 2°c limit? If so, take a clear eyed look at what needs to happen to avert the worse effects of climate change: https://twitter.com/drvolts/status/1166566558946201600 …

I think the only way to practically do this is through the force of a world government. Short of that, the best way forward is to continue innovation and steps that don’t destroy the economies of our country or others.

You keep saying “destroy economies”. I would like you to expound on that idea. How will leading the world in clean energy and efficiency technology “destroy our economy”? The truth is that we’d strengthen our economy because we’d be on the cutting edge of what the world needs.

I think if you listen to the podcast I sent earlier, it will articulate the economic models discussion about climate change.

I’m listening to it right now and the @ScottAdamsSays argument falls entirely flat with me. He ignores (and Harris doesn’t bring up) the enormous downside risk of inaction. Sure, we need a strong economy to do anything big, but without some urgent action there may be no economy.

I think it’s an unknown. Claiming it’s known has proven wrong over and over.

No, it hasn’t. When they were discussing this point and @ScottAdamsSays asks about the accuracy of climate models I wanted to jump in and point out that their mistakes have been in the direction of not predicting enough warming. It’s happening faster than early models predicted!

You mean the models they didn’t discard for being wrong were approximately right?

They’ve constantly updated their models so I challenge the idea that they “didn’t discard” them. The point is that they were wrong in the direction so as to inspire more action, not less. & the cost of inaction is far higher than action, especially in an already strong economy.

What do you think happens to any models that show less-than-scary warming? You think they keep those? Remember there are hundreds of models.

When modeling, any that are out of the mean tend to be discarded, yes. The extra rosy ones and the extra doomsday ones. The consensus heads toward the mean. It doesn’t mean there is 0% chance we’ll have non-scary warming but the chance for scary results are much much higher.

I’d submit “Black Swan” events, ala @nntaleb, has disproven the normal distribution of “models”. The 2008 financial crisis is the modern “proof” of this.
