Great advice on how to persuade rather than polarize on gun control. Basic moral psych, Dale Carnegie: https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/lee-carter-gun-control-is-what-most-americans-want-heres-the-only-way-for-both-sides-to-get-there …pic.twitter.com/Wo8In8qD2T

I'm not persuaded. Timing, more than wording, is much more critical. We are in a time where the people who want to disarm people have been screeching racist/sexist/bigot at us for years. We're not going to listen to anything they have to say until this is dealt with first.

You're a brilliant mind, Dr. Haidt. I have enjoyed all of your published works I can get my hand on, and cite your work more frequently than anybody. But this is- it's a little naive.

I think you might do well to read Win Bigly to learn about pacing and leading for persuasion. The advice in the article is perfect, and compatible with all known science on the topic.

Read Loserthink in November. It explains how slippery slopes are imaginary.

I make very few exceptions when it comes to pre-ordering, but you just sold me. The slippery-slope fallacy is a fallacy in itself- ...or at least that’s the approach I normally take to explain it. My results are about 50/50, depending on the temperament of the other party.

So history didn't happen? The history of societies slipping towards totalitarianism and losing freedoms is basically the history of the entire world.

He’s saying that a “slippery-slope” is not a logical fallacy. Predicting outcomes is both a rational thing to do, and an irrational thing to believe. Labeling a potential outcome a slippery-slope is the dark side of persuasion.

Scott, you convinced me that a slide on the slippery slope will always reverse course (or stop) when the slide meets effective counter forces. So slippery slopes exist, and so do effective counter forces.
