There were people here on Twitter the night of the event claiming they were tricked. None of the advertising up to that point (that I saw, anyway) referred to it as anything but a free speech eent.

Bluntly, one of the reasons why they choose an issue like this, is that the Nazis are hoping that respectable people show up in solidarity with the cause of keeping the statue up, even if they disagree up with them on everything else. It’s a deliberate strategy

Would the statue supporters be open to some new southern pride symbols, statues, flags that would honor the non racists of south and that don’t offend half the country?

I'm not Southern, got no Southern 'pride,' no sympathies at all for the confederacy, but I also don't want to see history and art binned over modern emotional eruptions.
