No one chooses a war of self-destruction as a way of "winning."

Scott you should study Islam, becoming a martyr in the effort to spread Islam is a "good" thing according to an easy reading of Islamic theology. If you knew what Islam teaches you would realize self-destruction is approved of!

Interesting point... But I didn't think the leaders believed in doing the same self-destructive behavior that their followers do.

Why do you think the leaders of The Islamic Republic of Iran not be as fundamentalist as their followers? How could they even have the followers in the first place if their ideology wasn't similar...?

You think leaders believe in martyrdom for themselves?

Why would being a leader exempt them from believing in martyrdom? It is a fundamentalist religious belief that doesn't simply disappear when you start running a country.

They don't become martyrs without at least a chance of some sort of Islamic gain as the tradeoff. Destroying Iran for no good reason doesn't make anyone happy.

All Iranian leadership needs to believe is that the rest of the fundamentalist Muslim world (Pakistan, Saudi, ISIS, Al-Qaeda etc etc) would react intensely to USA destroying innocent Muslims in Iran. They could believe the reaction will unite Muslims against the evil West.

They could have achieved that long ago if it were the goal.
