Journalists cover sporting events all the time. They also don't get attacked outside the "ring". It feels like a stretch to say that's "the lesson" here. The sporting event analogy seems pretty weak and irrelevant to me. The outrage here is the attacks on non-combatants.

Andy was 'on' the field. The players on the 'other side' (Antifa) said publicly that if he came 'on the field' they would smash him like any other member of the opposing team (neo-Nazis). Antifa kept its promise. Andy played 'quarterback' without a defensive team? Sack.
