I’m okay with it because competitive sports are not important.

People like lots of things that are overrated and bad for them. I'm all for exercise and recreational sports. But the organized stuff is more bad than good.

Ok... I have seen what organized High School sports did for my two nephews... It was good for those boys.. really good... and I am not a sports fan at all.. So this really is a matter of perspective.

You described anecdotal experience we all agree about.

Well, ok, my perspective is anecdotal... hmmm I'll work on that. A quick looksee results in conclusions all over the place.. Sports are good, sports are bad. Still, hard to see one way or the other.. articles seem to contradict one another.. That leaves me with my anecdote..

Let’s listen to what Harvard has to say: Historically they will take solid B students that are champions at a sport over a perfect SAT because those people go on to do better in life and give more back to the university. It is fact. Anybody arguing against is uninformed.

No one argues that some athletes do great with sports.

That is not what the smartest universities in the world say. I know you are not claiming to be smarter than Harvard. Harvard says kids that achieve in sports AND can maintain solid grades will statistically out perform their general student body in life. That is HUGE.

In fact. Many ivy league schools will take a kid that was on a .. say... champion fencing team even if they do not have a fencing team because that is a predictor for success later in life and more donations to the school. We need more categories for kids to succeed in, not less

Good argument for eliminating sports. They only highlight what is special for certain types of people who are good at sports.

I'm with Scott here. I love sports. I play sports. Sports are great. But what does sports have to do with succeeding in college? I would argue, nothing (in most cases).

That is the opposite of the implied value. When you find team activities that stress an individual to be the best they become better. And those changes (epigenetic?) last a life time. I prefer a world where we are creating the maximal number of peak humans, not less.
