Structured sports are bad for kids developmentally. They can receive perminant damage. Occasionally playing a game of horse on the basketball court is fine.

Parents have turned childhood into a toltolitarian regime. My fondest childhood sports memories are of unsupervised pickup games with packs of friends.

I second this! Today, sports have become highly competitive with expectations at such an early age-professional training camps, lots of adult imposed pressures & oversight, etc. Very few opportunities for average normal kids who just want to play sports for the sport of it.

There are a variety of leagues in youth sports. Community leagues are not as competitive-based as the travel teams. Yes, there are over the top parents but it’s not the norm. Sports are great for kids.
