      Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Retweeted Max Kennerly

This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and “fact check” it. Like the “world ending in 12 years” thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal. But the GOP is basically Dwight from The Office so who knows.https://twitter.com/MaxKennerly/status/1127600111952044032 …

I've seen criticism of "like 10 people." The ten richest Americans are worth $730 billion. The fourteen richest American families (excluding the Koch brothers, so no double-counting) are worth $511 billion. Together, they're worth more than 60% of Americans combined. https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1127270688925134849 …

Hey @ScottAdamsSays, I know you don't think gaslighting is a thing, but this is the closest I've seen to gaslighting one's *own supporters* (I'm assuming here that sea sponges would be on the "low" range of social intelligence)

It seemed obvious to me at the time that it was not intended to be a literal.

What did you think @AOC intended to mean Scott? Did it mean the the world is not coming to an end in 12 years? If so what is the real reason for the deprivations required by the #GND? What is the really, really bad thing that is going to happen?

Yes. It’s obvious that the meaning is “start soon” because starting later is too late. It was hyperbole.

And the constant hyperbole over the years—and it has been constant—is why the majority of people do not take alarmists like AOC, McKibben, et al, serious about anything.

Was the 1988 Toronto climate conference declaration comparing global warming to nuclear war hyperbole too? If so, it suggests climate hyperbole is a poor comms strategy.

Okay, but a couple of things. 1) it still seems to me to be an estimation in the same order of magnitude 2) she wants people to think that is the amount of time to act.

Wrong,@ScottAdamsSays. She was riling up people who are susceptible to messages like this. They took it literally. Fortunately she was mocked so heavily for it, it didn't gain much traction. We learned our lesson from @algore. You must mock them in these cases.

It is interpreted as hyperbole only when the originator is considered intelligent. This interpretation doesn't work so well with AOC. But it certainly resonates with her naive supporters.
