It is safe to assume China prefers a president Biden. It is also likely they will try to influence the election by stalling on a trade deal until they see who will get the Dem nomination. Should we make tariffs permanent and walk away? @GordonGChang

Right; no pain, no gain. Must be viewed in big-picture, real life context, not through text books.

That’s a poor analogy when you don’t have a surgeon calling the shots...

That's not a good analogy at all. We're not talking about temporary pain to actually make something better. Tariffs are a tax on consumers, period. They're a throwback to the worst type of mercantilism. They've already made production inputs for many industries pricier.

In theory, tariff revenue can be distributed to industries damaged. Long term, factories move to Central America, solving immigration as well. And no IP theft.

The fact that taxpayers are footing the bill to pay agricultural industries to offset losses due to the tariffs tells you a good deal about the "effectiveness" of tariffs.

In a one-variable world, you would be right.

Surgery is painful and can often leave people worse off. People die from surgery every day. I prefer Free Markets.
