People often get a sense of identity, belonging, their "place" within society from their culture. I don't think that's inherently illegitimate, but it can merit criticism if it involves whitewashing the culture's history or claiming credit for an individual's accomplishments.

Heritages and cultures are usually social, though, how different persons, institutions, traditions, etc., interrelate to form a larger whole, not merely about claiming the qualities of individuals like Edison or the Kardashians for oneself.
