Vox morons cling to the “fine people” hoax that has been debunked by every major outlet this week INCLUDING Vox. Context: https://bit.ly/2Yc9ZFS  and https://bit.ly/2X6NDnZ  #finepeoplehoaxhttps://www.vox.com/2019/4/27/18520810/trump-poway-synagogue-shooting-response-green-bay …

does it still count as debunked if roughly 50% of Americans still believe it?

I only say the press debunked it, and the fact-checkers. The public is beyond help.

The public being beyond help is an interesting question. Is there a piece of persuasion that could help them? Is it even possible to imagine what form it would take, its general characteristics?

it's a saturation problem. If a voter is exposed to the truth of the hoax once, they can dismiss it (cognitive dissonance) and move on. You would need a firehose of repetition for months to change the public. And it would require no counter-argument, which is impossible.

Only once have I seen minds bound to a hoax dramatically break their ties. It was while serving on a jury in an urban area, deciding whether the defendant (AfAm) was guilty of murder. AfAms on the jury said NO, but something unimaginable changed their minds.

After reaching a compromise verdict (manslaughter), the judge revealed another charge to determine the D’s guilt. It had to be held back due to the prejudicial effect it would have had on the main case. Whether this crime required an increased sentence due to a prior conviction.

Once the AfAms, all woman, on the jury learned of the prior conviction - for selling drugs and having a weapon in a school zone - these ladies were ready to summarily execute the D outside the courthouse. It was stunning but comprehensible once it played out.

Something similar is what I always imagine and hope will turn around Trump haters, so many of whom I know and, in a sense, pray for. By the way, the hoax plaguing the main charge had to do with the ladies believing a magic bullet fired by another not the D struck the victim.

We were deadlocked for 3 days on whether it was reasonable to doubt guilt based on an outlandish what-if. The compromise verdict of manslaughter broke the logjam, and finally the reveal of the prior conviction turned the ladies into an angry mob.
