If "I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and white supremacists" because "they should be condemned totally", does it really matter if the "fine people" actually exist or if I just believe they do?

In a debate about whether or not Trump said something dumb and/or bad, it matters that the statement was dumb and/or bad, yes.

The debate is about whether Trump called neo-nazis and white supremacists fine people. He didn't. He said "they should be condemned totally"

He insisted, repeatedly, that there were very fine people at this specific rally. This is “the night before”. Maybe he’s just dumb. Maybe he’s just stubborn. But if you want people to know there’s no amount of white nationalism that’s acceptable to you, don’t muddy the waters.pic.twitter.com/LmYGUCb1K0

He stated, in plain language, without being prompted, "but not the neo-nazis and white supremacists. They are to be condemned totally" There's nothing ambiguous about that. Know who else was present in Charlottesville? Antifa. And journalists. Are they all nazis too?

According to Trump, the “very fine people” were protesting the removal of the statue. Were Antifa and/or journalists doing that?

You must be getting tired from moving the goal posts so far. He said there were good people and bad people on each side. He said neo-nazis and white nationalists "should be condemned totally." Your complaints are stemming from mind-reading and/or hallucinations

Everything I’ve said is completely and utterly factual. I’ve moved no goalposts. Trump said something, on national TV, that was made up bullshit. If he wanted to project moral clarity, maybe don’t say some “very fine people” were marching with the Tiki torch brigade! The end.

You're making things up again. He said there were "very fine people" on both sides. He didn't say those people were marching with "the tiki torch brigade." He said the tiki torch brigade should be condemned totally. Example of a "very fine person": https://mediaequalizer.com/melanie-morgan/2017/08/what-really-happened-in-charlottesville-a-peacekeeper-tells-her-story …

He said there were “very fine people” “on both sides” “the night before”. The tiki torch march was the night before. Michelle Piercey does not claim to have been at that march. The leader of a local pro-statue group says they stayed away from both rallies. https://www.weeklystandard.com/stephen-f-hayes/hayes-where-are-trumps-very-fine-people …pic.twitter.com/1wq2Fx9mFf

You can’t lawyer your way out of Trump’s direct statement “condemns totally.” Worst case, he got a fact wrong. It was reasonable to assume diverse opinions show up to public protests of any kind. No matter who organizes what.

I'm not lawyering out of anything. He said something demonstrably false (and outrageous). In the same press conference, he stressed that he had carefully collected the facts before making his statement. He has stuck by the statement, repeatedly, as recently as last week.pic.twitter.com/0hWmK7qZSo

If Trump wished to use the occasion of a white supremacist murdering a young woman to project crystal clear moral leadership, he could've avoided any (demonstrably false) both-sides-ism regarding the rally the "night before". Or quickly corrected his statement. He hasn't.
