IMO because (many) people identify with the athlete or team of their choice. They feel the sense of victory when their favorite wins, and the (vicarious) agony of defeat when they lose. Those people constitute the audience. Presumably they are paying for the sport. 1/3

AFAIK intramural sports in our world date back to the Greek (Hellenic) Olympics, where all or most citizens of the city (Polis) identified with their city's entries. It's very different now. 2/3
