I don't think a global conspiracy is required. There are "Thought Leaders" that drive things in many walks of life. They drive things and others follow and it can reach a point where anyone who challenges them is at great risk.

Exactly. What do they want their findings to be: "Brilliant scientists find the key to saving humanity." OR "Nevermind, we were wrong. There's no significant increase in warming."

Global conspiracy sounds like you are building up another strawman. How about "globalist" conspiracy? People of like minded ideology pushing that ideology to strengthen their grip on power, their grip on institutions? Like science / research grant awarding institutions...
