Prior to the 19th Amendment, SCOTUS said, 'Yes, the states can legally take away the right to vote on account of sex. The 14th Amendment doesn't prevent this." That's why a 19th Amendment was necessary. Likewise the 26th Amendment for 18&overs. States have power over voting.

I just re-read the SCOTUS ruling and realized I misspoke: What SCOTUS said is that voting rights *aren't even a privilege of citizenship*, much less an inalienable right. Which is why the 14th Amendment's "privileges & immunities" clause had no bearing. https://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/88/162 …

This topic is kinda blowing chers mind at the moment. On principle i agree with giving them the right. But youd be giving a mayor influence in the country to some of the worst people in society. Democrats are walking into a mine field with this one.

Except two of the most common felony offenses are drug possession and driving under the influence. Neither of these make you stellar role models, but do they make you "some of the worst people"? Not unless they're accompanying some pretty egregious other behaviors.

under what circumstances could a citizen lose the right to vote?
-
1) For conviction of a felony, in several states. 2) For being under the age of 18, in most states. The point is the right to vote is something on top of both "inalienable rights" and "the rights of citizenship". You aren't born or naturalized (if under 18) w/ the right to vote.

Prior to the 15th and 19th amendments yes.... That's exactly why they exist to prohibits states from infringing upon voting rights on protected classes. Otherwise, they serve no purpose of existing.
-
It gets confusing to hear Bernie Sanders talk about our democratic values that the country was founded on when in actuality the people who created the country greatly feared democracy. The term voting right isn't even mentioned until the 14th amendment was ratified.
