As you have now learned, your understanding of the nuclear path was outdated. My view confirms to Bill Gates’ view and everyone else who is up to date. Catch up!

I think research in this area is a good idea. But I also know that when you put v complex & expensive technology together with dangerous material plus a long history of failure, you are likely to get more of the same.

Exactly. That's why Gen IV is simpler and addresses the problems you recognize from older tech. You're just behind on your knowledge. Catch up with some reading and reassess.

You don't. You don't even have mature nuclear technology, much less the manufacturing resources to mass produce it. Of course, solar isn't mature yet either, but it's a lot farther along than GenIV nuclear.

As far as I can tell, all "GenIV" nuclear is still at the prototyping stage, building one after another and learning as they go. Solar, wind, even batteries are already in an exponentially declining cost curve. Problems with intermittents/storage are being solved right smartly.

Isn't there a physics ceiling on how much better solar can get? I thought we were nearing it.

Single layer mono-crystalline silicon is up to around 21-22% efficiency from incident energy to bus. I've assumed 20% for all my calcs/projections, since multi-layer will be much more expensive. Declining cost is mostly due to reducing cost of ultra-pure silicon. 1/2

Also there are techniques for making the top, ultra-pure layer much thinner, but the falling price of ultra-pure (zone refined) silicon has kept it from being pursued right now. 2/2

Scott, solar can always get cheaper/more widely used. But power isn't all energy and RE has tremendous footprints. Seen Schellenberger? https://quillette.com/2019/02/27/why-renewables-cant-save-the-planet/ … We definitely need much faster innovation/more competition+choice. For that, we must remove liability caps+regs.

The efficiency of solar panels is of minor importance because its raw material - sunshine is free. $/watt cost is more significant for payback analysis.
