Your knowledge is out of date. The new Gen IV plants have no meltdown risk and eat the nuclear waste from older plants as their fuel. It is the MOST planet-friendly technology by a huge margin. Solar and wind can't come close.

You must be joking. Solar and wind are already writing long-term Power purchase agreements for 3 - 4 cents per kWh. The new Hinckley Point C nuke plant in the UK needs a guaranteed price of 14 cents per kWh

Solar and wind could be free and they would still suck compared to Gen IV nuclear. Unless you only want to watch TV when the wind is blowing (I exaggerate for humorous intent). But in any event, I'm sure you numbers are wrong. Must be forgetting govt subsidies?

which number? Solar/wind or nuclear? I work in the energy business by the way.

Cost numbers. Unlikely that solar and wind are REALLY more economical than new Gen IV systems coming online. You must be figuring in government subsidies. And to be competitive with Gen IV, you have to add battery storage to your solar/wind calculations.

Those costs for solar & wind are now market based not govt subsided eg recent commercial projects in Chile and Dubai. Solar panels prices have dropped by 50% in the last two yrs alone. Going off-shore will continue to push wind prices down.

The Clean Power Plan subsidies have an effect on the price of energy from these assets until they fall apart.

Anybody who knows a little about the history of nuclear (both fisson & fusion) has heard all these promises before. It's the old 'too cheap to meter' with another coat. That said, I am open to more research.

One of the other issues with Nuclear is that it cannot be integrated with renewables as its baseload cannot cycle up and down easily unlike fossil fuel plants.

We do have nuke/renewable integration and GenIII was designed to load follow. Most large plants are going be most efficient at base load, same as solar and wind. We even have nukes with integrated desalinization. GenIII is most reliable, most history. GenIV holds promise

This is possible with HDVC lines which have low transmission losses over long distances. It should be straightforward to move solar power from Arizona to NY. The main barriers to moving solar from North Africa to Europe are political & financing.

No, you don't. Pumped hydro or power-to-gas/liquid fuel would also work. And you don't need extra storage if you pair it with gas (CCGT). CCGT is fast ramping up/down, very cheap to capitalize (fuel more expensive), and solar could pay for itself in fuel savings when available.

Has anyone done projected LCOE for these GenIV Nuclear accounting for heavy load following (which some of them can do, unlike earlier)? Or do they assume that once it's online it'll always run at full power? Full power would require storage just like solar/wind.

This is not how the grid works. Nuclear does produce useful baseload. Storage is not necessary.
