What's his opinion of Gen IV nuclear? (I'll bet I know.)

He thinks solar can power the world (100%) within 20 years. I'm guessing even you don't think GenIV could achieve that.

I believe solar could do that, and so could wind, but at a cost that is much higher than Gen IV nuclear in the long run. Economics always matter.

Yup. Calculations I've seen (including from people I don't like) have convinced me that the experience curve for GenIV will probably take many decades to reach 100% of demand.

That feels to me a lot like "there is no way we can solve the Y2K problem on time!" If we build rapid iteration sites, all bets are off.

The speed of construction is dependent on the size of the emergency. If we need them faster to save the world, we almost certainly can do better.

How is it going to be paid for? Neither party is going to support huge government expenditures, and building 20 plants before you've had experience with the design will be hugely expensive.

Exactly no need to regulate the carpet in the control room to ensure it matches the simulator. This happened at my plant this week.

Which begs the question: is nuclear power regulated beyond what it needs to be reasonably/very safe? And if so, where can regulations be relaxed without jeopardizing safety?

The Y2K bug wasn't actually a real problem. It was made up and tech companies got filthy rich off of it.

Actually, it really was a problem. HUGE amounts of business software was written with dates in character (BCD or EBCDIC) YYMMDD format and compared dates as simple character strings. For instance, the bank where I worked had its entire legacy mortgage processing system... 1/2
