Anything that explores new technology seems to be a good thing - except of course the actual ‘Manhattan Project’ which created nuclear bombs.

Manhattan Project funded the research that brought us a lot of what we know about how nuclear reactions work. If it wasn't for that, we wouldn't have nuclear power plants. Good or bad, a lot of very useful technology is funded by war. GPS is a good example

Before the Manhattan Project there was the Tennessee Valley Authority which was also focused on making large scale energy to remedy a problem, and which gave FDR's administration insights on how to organize science and industry, albeit for a somewhat different objective. Cheers.

There are many lessons to be learned from the experiences of both the TVA and of course the Manhattan Project, and the wiki on it is very interesting. Let's hope that while some things never change with big gov't programs we are able to learn from mistakes and make progress.
