Maybe those two were just telling the famous, wealthy and influential cartoonist what they thought he wanted to hear. Same for the NYT. Or maybe they genuinely don't think of themselves as racist. Sure.

Nevertheless, you could see how "I'm not racist, I just think we should honor this hero of the Confederacy" would be a pretty tough distinction for some folks to make, right?

The official purpose of the rally was to oppose the removal of the statue. It is perfectly reasonable to assume there were some good people mixed up in that crowd.
