Has the method for measuring “average temperature” (whatever that even means) been consistent for the last 100 years?

Everybody's using the same data (historical observations/measurements). What's different is the model they use to translate to presumed "surface temperature", or whatever. The output of those different models is the new "data" used as input to their experiments.

I don’t think anyone has claimed that bad data is preferred to good data. I think the contention is as to what makes data good/bad, and a key reiterated point is that you can’t take existing data and make it better data. You can only process it. “Data” usually refers to raw data.

To get better data, you collect new data in a better way. That’s the only way to make data better. You can’t process bad data to get it to give you better info. In fact, the “data processing inequality” is a proven mathematical statement to this very effect.
