The third explanation (and the correct one, in my view) is false memory. The biggest pushback I get on this topic is "I heard it with my own ears," despite the fact it never happened. @jaketapper @donlemon @ChrisCuomo @CNNhttps://twitter.com/CortesSteve/status/1108699255353630720 …

False memory may be an arguement but there are a hell of a lot of false memories to contend with if that is the case

False memories are the norm, not the exception.

Weirdly, in the entirety of the human condition, most of our memories never happened. Dont believe it? Just find someone who should have the same memory about something from even a month ago, much less many years ago, as you and ask them what they recall about it.

I don't think it mainly a 'false memory' as such but a false inference. 'Fine people both sides' was immediately interpreted as implying neo-nazi support and the denial was nt widely reported. Pple 'remember' the inference from 'both sides' cus they weren't told about the denial

I think it had more to do with how the media jumped on the miss interpretation as fact. Most people never hear the actual speech they heard only sound bits afterward. Many assumed it happened because in confirmed what they already believed.
