Here is a discussion of one of the USA graphs showing the effects of carefully ignoring most of the data from a large dataset. https://tamino.wordpress.com/2018/08/08/usa-temperature-can-i-sucker-you/ …

Has the method for measuring “average temperature” (whatever that even means) been consistent for the last 100 years?

Trick question. Are rational adjustments for published reasons allowed?

Do you see the irrationality in your question? No scientist approves of fudging. All scientists approve of adjusting data from lower quality to higher.

No. Raising “quality” of data after the fact IS fudging Good scientists (not even close to “all”) understand there are uncertainties at all stages of science, including errors in recording, and their statistical analysis and conclusions reflect that uncertainty.

You would use bad data in an experiment even when you knew you had good data to use instead? I admire your discipline.

My daily life is spent sifting through crappy data and poor conclusions made by scientists. Assuming that people who are highly susceptible to bias are doing pristine work is dangerous.

🤣 Nobody in the discussion prefers to "use bad data". Right now you've gone full la-la-can't-hear-you. But I'm sure at some point you'll drop the "Do you even science, bro?" posturing, look into Complex Systems thinking, and have a nice chat with some complexity folks.

I'd like to see you try to refute each others points so the audience can better understand what's going on. I think Twitter and the character length leads to arguments that can't tell the whole story and cause fights. I really like and respect everyone involved here, too.

That is important of course, but not relevant to the question of whether good data is better than bad data. If that sounds like a dumb question to ponder, you are all up to speed.
