If I understood Joe's point correctly, he's arguing that when researchers start deciding what is good or bad data it opens the door for biasing the samples to achieve a preconceived theory that may not be very accurate, and reaching a false conclusion from the research.

Let's say we have 100 thermometers in Florida and one in Nome Alaska. Is that good data, representative data? If I adjust the data to be representative, is it better? Let's say over the course of a 100 years I add more thermometers, can I compare trends? Or do I need to adjust?
