Does this really work in Corporate life? One of my professors when leaving corporate was offered a 40% raise just to stay and forget about his teaching job (25% of what he was going to be paid).
-
It worked for me the one time I tried it for 5%. On another occasion, a colleague left and in his exit interview he threatened that his underpaid colleagues would soon leave for the same offer. That same day, we 3 were raised to $12/hr. For me, that was 33%. It was in 1987.

As a smooth haired boss I loved hearing the “I quit” or even lamer “I’m thinking of quitting “ gambit. Called them out every time...ACCEPTED!

That reminds me of a time when a recruiter called me. I had visited Puyallup and adored the scenery. After the call I told my boss, "If I go visit again I'll accept their offer.". He replied, "What'll it take to keep you from visiting again?" I said, "5%". He said, "Done."
