No one suggests turning professional tennis into a ladder. The point is that men and women can compete if you arrange it right. It just happens to be less entertaining so it isn't a business.

Yes, they "can" compete, but it would be a competition where men would always dominate. Which would deny the sense of accomplishment from the top tier women. If Nadal became trans tomorrow, and started competing in women's tennis, he would be winning literally every year.
