I look at things from an evolutionary perspective. Carbs/ sugars in high amounts would not have been possible for prehistoric humans. Alcohol / other intoxicants would have been easier to find and for lack of a better work exploit giving out bodies a chance to adapt.

Just a hunch, but I think; you're right on this. I don't believe 1 glass of wine at a meal really hurts anything, but I don't think, that it helps either. 2,3, or more glasses begins to hurt.
