Has the method for measuring “average temperature” (whatever that even means) been consistent for the last 100 years?

Trick question. Are rational adjustments for published reasons allowed?

Do you see the irrationality in your question? No scientist approves of fudging. All scientists approve of adjusting data from lower quality to higher.

No. Raising “quality” of data after the fact IS fudging Good scientists (not even close to “all”) understand there are uncertainties at all stages of science, including errors in recording, and their statistical analysis and conclusions reflect that uncertainty.

Fudging means to "present or deal with (something) in a vague, noncommittal, or inadequate way, especially so as to conceal the truth or mislead." Fudging does not mean "changing data in any way," including corrections. Vaguely calling corrective adjustments fudging is misleading

Introducing your own confirmation biases into the measured data.....does NOT increase data quality. Data quality is increased by gathering more data from various diverse sources, not by "correcting" the data.

Scott, you have made a respectable effort to examine climate arguments on all sides. Listen to Joe here. He knows what he’s saying. You can’t look at data like this without probability, including the probability that your data is crap. Bias in scientific research is real.

It’s a shame this resulted in blockade fallout. It’s pretty simple: “change” is objective and “improve” is subjective. To avoid opinionated arguing, principled scientists agree not to change data outside of the experiment window. The intent of changes doesn’t matter b/c bias.
