I think "gaslighting" is used as a phrase "To make someone believe something that isn't true." So in Smollett's case, it's to make people believe the country is deeply homophobic and racist, despite evidence to the contrary.

As a former victim of gaslighting from a narccistic ex, I know it's real. It is about making you doubt your reality and creating a false narrative that you accept. Not just doubting your sanity, but doubting the validity of what you remembered or can reasonably conclude.
