Specifically with molten salt reactors there is no build up of fission products (the source of heat for meltdown) as the fuel is in the coolant and the fission products are filtered out and removed while the reactor is online.

In pebble bed reactors they use the heat to go into a hot idle state. Where they sit idling and don’t generate any power until the plant cools down. The physical properties of uranium at high temperatures is what makes this happen.
