You're mixed up on this, Scott. The advantage of using satellite measurements is that they cover virtually 100 percent of the atmosphere at multiple altitudes. And importantly this includes the troposphere where the direct effect of AGW must by theory be measurable.

Ocean temperature change lags because of slower transfer. Water simply holds heat longer and releases it slowly. Years of climate cooling will lead to cooling seas. Having recently read about Hawaii, undersea volcanic activity must be considered re: temperature.
