Michael Mann relied upon sediment data contaminated by ditch digging (upside-down no less) to get his tree-ring free hockey stick. When that faulty proxy was removed, the hockey stick disappeared.

Because tree rings are easier to come by, in more areas, than Ice and sediment cores. They also reflect rainfall and CO2 concentrations which make them improper for the past century.
