Not all tree-rings track temperature as well as others, it is called "divergence". Some tree-rings do track temperature. This guy explains the so-called "decline in a subset of climate proxies". They use a combination of proxies, not just one kind:https://youtu.be/dc8A6SIJijs

Good lord that was unpersuasive. Why did we need tree rings before if the other proxies are better?

I don't know about you Jeff but this is a shocker that persuades me the other way. Let me rephrase it "Tree-ring don't match the period where we have good measures but we're pretty sure they're good with the period where we don't".

Fallacy Here: Oversimplification. Tree-ring growth is influenced by more than one factor. Something post-1960 affected the growth OF SOME (not all) of the tree-rings. The conspiracy theory you guys are trying to concoct is highly improbable, but keep trying. It is amusing.

What a change of tone all of a sudden. I value our conversations, I am not in for the fights. I won’t argue against you. I am sure that if you read again your point you’ll find easily why it works against the « tree rings are reliable » argument anyway.

The key here is, SOME (not all) tree-ring data diverge due to other effects and time periods. That does not invalidate the tree-rings which match other proxies or instrumental data. They are just one of many indicators showing the warming trend. Nuance.

Why were tree rings the main evidence of past temperatures when other proxies are so good they can validate the tree rings? Either tree rings are essential or they can be discarded for the better measures.

potholer54 (Peter Hadfield) said he would be available in a week or two and he can answer your questions, probably a whole lot better than I can. It would be nice if he could appear on your app sometime.
