I actually agree it’s not a term that makes sense for a politician. People tend to use it as a synonym for lying. That may explain the confusion.

Whether or not you've seen it (to take you literally, just in case), would you not say that this is something that cult leaders do? Make you think you're insane (or naive) for believing normal stuff? And then your mind is wide open for whatever garbage they throw in there.

I think you’re hearing “gaslighting “ a defense mechanism. Inducing Cognitive Dissonance can make people question their own reality. Attacking the messenger is easier than accepting facts that are incompatible with strongly held beliefs.

People who claim gaslighting by the President or anyone else are admitting they feel insane but can't figure out why. Gaslighting is the only explanation their imagination can fathom.

It’s likely but I can’t rule out their hypothesis that Trump is a Master Manipulator. In a way that’s conceding victory to
@ScottAdamsSays “he’s good at bending minds but we don’t like it”. The other half of the way would be conceding that it’s not impossible he means well too.
