Met a guy in 98 who could evaluate COBOL code and database structure (no one had source code anymore) and patch it. Dude was pulling $8k/day plus expenses. Was pretty much on the road every day for yrs fixing big financial firm programs. That's the reason Y2K didn't happen.

Guys, the report says, over and over, that there is a range of possible outcomes and how bad it actually is depends (of course!!) on what we actually decide to do in the coming years.

The one good thing that came out of it was it convinced bosses to upgrade some software and hardware that was overdue for it.

Y2k was probably overblown, as those clients of ours that ignored the issue fared no worse than those that spent lots of money fixing it. Italy, Russia and other countries reportedly didn't spend much on it, yet there were no reports of disasters. https://www.deseretnews.com/article/807969/100-billion-to-fix-Y2K-was-wasted.html …

...and our office had old noncompliant PCs that fared OK. All we had to do was manually enter the correct date in the pc the next day, and that was only if you wanted the PC clock to have the right date, which wasn't used by our billing programs anyway.
