A confident economic forecast of a 10% change in the economy by end of the century looks exactly like a hoax to me. How do you forecast unexpected technological advances? And how do we know the GDP for 80 years when we don't know next quarter?https://twitter.com/CNNPolitics/status/1066051783359938560 …

So you didn’t read the report? It’s not attempting to predict technological changes that may save the day, nor offering a solution. It is merely a extrapolating forward what is known today and predicting the outcome.

Doesn’t that render the prediction utterly meaningless then?

Nearer term predictions would be more accurate, but not attempting to understand the scope of a problem would be irresponsible. private investment in a solution won’t yield roi for decades so no investment in a tech fix. Thus not included in predictions.

A lot of things in the world have the "If this doesn't stop, the world is doomed" quality about them.

Agreed. It’s useful to know the scope of a problem, the risks, and the probability of outcomes. the report defines certainty but it’s worth considering among other data points. But not worthless, like quick dismal due to pre-existing biases.

That's exactly the problem though -- reliability is vastly overstated going to back Hansen's dog-and-pony show in 1988 in which he claimed high confidence that "business as usual" policy would result in much higher temps than actually happened. Zero accountability.

The worst thing about the fear mongering is that is put the brain out of higher functioning and into fight or flight reflexiveness. On the other hand. Free-market economics have developed solutions to things like food productions methods that have stopped worldwide starvation.

When I see fear mongering I stop and wonder what someone is trying to get me to do, or accept as an alternative. Like global Marxism to manage all of humanity. Or something like that.
