I thought he worded it pretty well though. He didn't state it as an analogy, but instead as a question about shared belief. If a belief correlates with an action, and others share that belief, it's reasonable to explore the relationship between belief and action.

Is it? Let's flip the analogy. Say, I have a friend who is a Christian, and has strong beliefs towards the poor and spends their life dedicated to charity. I am friends with them, but share no relevant common beliefs. Would expect my actions to be similar... 1/2

...based purely on our association? Conversely, supposed I shared similar beliefs about religion and the poor, would you then expect to see similar action? If the answer is "Yes" then "shared belief" and "association" are no the same thing. 2/2
