Yeah. Forget the economic collapse from the burst housing bubble and subprime lending. It was definitely the phones.

The economy was improving since 2008 while the live at homes were climbing.

Hiring didn't recover for years after that. I'm glad you weren't affected, but a large majority were.

If the economy is the main variable still, you would predict the line to start plunging now that the economy is humming?

You would, except that continued underemployment and wage stagnation maintain a class of people who have a hard time making housing work

My first "housing" was one room with no window and a shared bathroom down the hall. So I worked very hard to change that situation. My hypothesis is that smartphones plus living with parents is such a good deal compared to hard work that it's demotivating.

Automation. Brick and Mortar stores used to be entry level job source. Prime age labor participation making lower highs. Its why boomer housing bubble 2.0 has peaked. # of young starter buyers in death spiral. And, Trump can't get even get fed to stop raising mortgage rates.pic.twitter.com/T3Md3Z7Ckq

Obviously the economy caused the initial change. My hypothesis is that smartphones change behavior in a fundamental way and cause couch lock. The test is whether an improving jobs environment reverses the trend.

No, no, of course not. That doesn’t jive with Boomers idea that all millennials are lazy, entitled babies. Never mind that my wife works 60 hours a week trying to pay down the 70k she accumulated in student debt to get her master’s degree.

Yep. Smartphones make us lazy. That's CLEARLY the correct answer. How did nobody else come to this conclusion before?

It would be interesting to see this compared with statistic that reflect the mental state of the group. Variables like independence, loneliness, number of friends, etc.
