The older I get, the more I think you're right about such people being dangerous in any position of power, despite also being pitiable... And maybe authority hates comedy, because it often (mis?)interprets ordinary humor as mockery of authority.

I would add that it takes intelligence to enjoy intelligent humor. Dilbert is one of two cartoons that make me gut laugh. Calvin and Hobbes is the other.
