@ScottAdamsSays kneeling at the anthem is the same mistake the South made in the civil war:
Protesting Government Overreach = good, choosing Slavery as the hill to make a stand on = horrible
Protesting police brutality = good, disrespecting America to do it = horrible
Consider that we're talking about them. That's a clean win.

Ideally, they put themselves in the conversation with the high ground (like MLK Jr.) so change will actually happen. Getting talked about while taking the low ground may be an attention win, but if they want to accomplish change they need to move to the high ground ASAP

Here's one problem: which part of our collective American culture did the idea that kneeling is a sign of disrespect come from? I've not yet encountered some part of Americana where kneeling doesn't mean showing reverence. Except with Trump. Perhaps a valuable bargain chip?
