NOAA doesn't adjust daily temperature data, so metrics like percent of hot days can't be explained that way. Monthly US temperatures are massively altered, and this is done by

Actually the picture is worse if you correct for heat island effects where man made structures like cities raise the temperature thus needing correction downward.
