I think @ScottAdamsSays is mostly right about persuasion and facts not mattering in that context
However, I have found when I present people with a sound *argument* (not “facts”) for a dissenting position, they are often open to being persuaded.

I'm pretty sure I've noticed this in myself (albeit even with facts). It's like it doesn't stick if it doesn't match my world view. I sometimes try to keep a record of such facts (news stories) so I can go back later and have a sober view.
