Trump claims a deficit is prima-facia evidence that a deal is unfair. By that argument, when I buy your book, Scott is "unfair" to me. Rich buy more. USA has deficit in coffee and banana purchases. His argument is that we got those deficits partly from bad trade deals. Meaning unfair tariffs and subsidies. What is the counter-argument?

He's wrong. People much smarter than him worked for a long time on an acceptable set of trade deals for different product classes.

That suggests we have an agreement that got agreement. It doesn't suggest fairness.

Since we went into the agreement voluntarily, it does mean exactly that. Both sides saws advantages and disadvantages in different product classes, along with other factors and decided it was a fair deal. Those milk tarriffs are balanced by dozens of other factors.

Almost correct! People sign the deal they can get, not the one they think is the most fair.
