Our latest story "Lynx to the Past" is now online & available to read While ancient DNA may not yet allow the cloning of woolly mammoths, it can help inform the return of species that lived in Scotland more recently. 📸 /scotlandbigpicture.com

For we're celebrating the engineers who work tirelessly to bring these ecosystems back to Scotland. As beavers build their dams they create life-giving, carbon-storing, flood-mitigating, drought-saving, water-filtering wetlands. And they do all that for free!

After yesterday’s tweet about habitat loss today’s is a little more positive. WOW, a wild otter in the burn that runs along the Aviemore orbital. My first ever wild otter close encounter.

Some positive news! A million trees are being planted alongside rivers in the Cairngorms to help tackle declining salmon stocks. The trees will line the tributaries of the Dee & provide shade to help keep river temps down which can affect young salmon.

The first to establish have a tough time of it but, if they succeed, they can make things a lot easier for others. A medium density of trees has been shown to reduce windspeed to 20% of its original force at distances up to 5 times the height of the trees. 1/

A YouGov surveys suggests 82% of Brits want lost species returned to the UK. Birds topped the list for proposed reintroductions with beavers close behind. If more was known about our native lynx, would this species appear higher up the rankings?

What do you see when you look at this tree? A mess that needs to be tidied, or an opportunity for life after death? Did you know the last remaining tree-nesting swifts in Britain are amongst the ancient woodland of ’s Abernethy reserve?

“While we were studying glaciers, we left school to walk up a hill. We didn’t have to take notes or ordered to stay on the path. We were allowed to explore, to learn at our own rates & to enjoy the beauty of a landscape shaped by glaciers.”

Nowadays, expansive woodland views are few & far between in Scotland, but here’s a few favourites. New woodland corridors would help join up these fragmented habitats & increase the overall health of the forest, & its inhabitants. 📸 /scotlandbigpicture.com

Protecting a tree from browsing is simple, inexpensive and quick. Follow these three steps; ✅Wrap the tree with wire-mesh leaving space for it to grow. ✅Pin the mesh wrap into the ground. ✅Test your handy work to make sure it’s secure.

Meet Blondie Pig. The way she grazes creates a mosaic of grassland and woodland. Her dung helps enrich the soil as well as benefitting insect life. Blondie Pig is a lawn-mowing, nutrient-cycling, soil-enriching ecological machine. She just has an unfortunate name!
