I’ve never been promoted, in 20+ years of working in software. Hadn’t fully realized it until I saw this thread & thought through all the ‘transitions’ I’ve been through. @craignicol I’ve managed my own 25 career in IT as I have only ever had 2 stints as a permanent employee. Often more effective to do it yourself, even as an employee but just moving around where suits.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes
The biggest pay rises I got as a permie - and the only promotions I got - were the 3 times I moved to a new company. Staying in the same company for 30 years might get you a good redundancy pay off but it rarely rewards your career or your wallet.
