A guess: I never met Steve, but I think he would would also chase perfecting digital light-fields and NTR (Neurologically True Reality) vs. the cheap shortcuts.

He got married there and collected Ansel Adams photos. Ansel’s son gave me one I treasure to this day.

We were making these same comments in the 90’s about our Sony Walkman and the HMDs of the day. And still are today, 30 years later.

I sold thousands of Sony Walkmans in the 1980s working in a popular Silicon Valley consumer electronics store and I don’t remember a single person talking to me about VR back then.
