Very common. But I rarely worry about the trajectory of students with imposter syndrome, because they tend to care deeply about their success and tend to be quite self-aware (if underconfident). It’s the overly confident ones I worry about.

Those are the ones who immediately go into leadership and into politics.

Hang in there. My PhD advisor says students are ready to graduate when they despair anyone will give them a PhD for work that is so trivial. What seemed daunting a few yrs ago will become easy as your understanding grows

I wish I had heard this when I was finishing my PhD. I was sure everything I wrote was bad. 20 years later as a professor I realize it was actually really great. Grad school really wears you down.

Simultaneously treated like an over achiever and belittled for not having a “real job”

Someone: “what’s your major?” Me: “Conservation Biology”. Them:”...ah. What are you gonna do with that?!?” OR... My personal favorite: “Oh you’re SO lucky. I LOVEEEE nature. I saw a tree once on Instagram and it changed my life. You just get to be in the woods all day? A dream!
